INDIA. Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has rolled out additional terminal entry points (eGates) to allow more efficient movement of passengers through various touchpoints.
The extra eGates are part of the Digital Gateway programme, which aims to streamline airport procedures.
The upgrade brings the total number of eGates from 24 to 68, expanding the airport’s capacity by three times to 7,440 passengers per hour at Terminal 2 and 2,160 at Terminal 1. It also reduces wait times to less than a minute.

Through this expanded Digital Gateway programme, T1 now has six dedicated DigiYatra eGates and six non-DigiYatra eGates. DigiYatra is a biometric system which enables passengers to pass through eGates without the need to present their ticket, boarding pass or identity verification.
The airport company is now working on adding 118 eGates at the pre-embarkation security check area at T2 to further simplify passenger movement.
The Digital Gateway integrates technology, big data analytics and design thinking, without the need for major structural works.
The Digital Gateway solution leverages a variety of IoT sensors and biometric face pods combined with the DigiYatra technology to identify and guide passengers efficiently, CSMIA noted.
Human ‘Digi buddies’ will be assisting first-time DigiYatra passengers in using the automated systems.
CSMIA will also be the first to deploy artificial intelligence and machine learning-enabled cameras to bolster the overall security system at the airport.
A CSMIA spokesperson said: “We are excited to announce the significant expansion of our DigiYatra facility on our digital gateway platform at CSMIA. This initiative reflects our dedication to pioneering technological advancements that enhance passenger experience.
“By increasing the number of eGates and integrating advanced biometric systems, we are committed to ensuring swift, secure and seamless travel for all our passengers. Our focus remains on enhancing efficiency and convenience, making CSMIA a global leader in airport innovation.” ✈
