INDIA. The eagerly anticipated opening of the state-of-the-art Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 1 is set to take place on Saturday (17 August).
The timing was announced by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a joint venture led by GMR Airport Infrastructure Limited, which operates and manages India’s busiest gateway.
The new terminal, completed under DIAL’s Phase 3A expansion programme, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March.
Described as ‘hyper-well-planned’ with a passenger-centric approach, the terminal offers modern technology and infrastructure. Passengers can also enjoy an extensive and diverse array of retail and dining offers.

The expansion work started in 2019, as per the Master Plan 2016, in response to the sharp increase in passenger traffic.
With the expansion, the airport’s annual capacity has increased to 100 million passengers a year from the previous 40 million.
The opening will ease congestion at terminals 2 and 3, with several airlines transferring their operations to the new facility.

Among them, budget carrier IndiGo is set to move 34 flights from T2 and T3 to T1 starting 2 September, while SpiceJet will operate 13 flights from the new terminal from 17 August.

Delhi International Airport Ltd CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said: “Delhi Airport is glad to announce the operationalisation of new Terminal 1 from 10 August. The state-of-the-art Terminal 1 will significantly boost our capacity, easing pressure on Terminals 2 and 3. Passengers can expect a smoother travel experience with improved amenities and advanced technology.”

To enhance the passenger journey, the revamped terminal is equipped with automated check-in machines, named Q Buster-Mobile Check-in Service.
Other operational upgrades have also been introduced, including an automated tray retrieval system, individual carrier system, common usage self-service, aerobridges and self-baggage drop kiosks.

The terminal also features expanded baggage reclaim carousels, multiple entry gates, prayer room, yoga area, quiet zone, group seating, laptop charging stations, mobile charging stations, self-medication room, baby care rooms and smart washrooms.
The terminal is well connected with Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line at arrivals and departures. Bus service by state-run Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is available at regular intervals. T1 is well connected with terminals 2 and 3 through a shuttle bus service, also run by DTC.
The Terminal’s city-side developments include forecourt areas and bigger parking facilities. To ease vehicle traffic, the pick-up and drop-off lanes have been realigned.
The redesigned apron, featuring 82 Code C stands and a dual taxiway, ensures improved air traffic flow, faster aircraft turnaround and enhanced safety. ✈
