USA. New York-based travel retailer International Shoppes has begun a ten-year duty free contract at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport terminals A, B and D. The concession covers six stores: four for core category duty free, one Chanel store and one outlet currently occupied by Hershey’s. The last of these will be converted to a MAC beauty store across 260sq ft by year-end.
All of the stores will undergo renovations soon.
International Shoppes Director Matthew Greenbaum told The Moodie Davitt Report: “It’s a major step for us. It’s a move outside of our existing geographic footprint of the US north-east. From here, we can continue to grow in a lot of directions. Houston is the fourth largest city in the US and we are looking forward to establishing our company as part of the Houston community.”
International Shoppes took over the concession this week from ATÜ Americas, which last year declared its intention to exit its contract early. The Houston Airport System issued a tender for the business in late 2018.
ATÜ Americas’ gross sales hit US$10.5 million in fiscal year 2018, with around US$10 million from duty free and the balance from speciality stores. Total airport duty free sales in FY18 were around US$23 million; Dufry is the other major duty free retailer at Houston.
