Airports of Thailand traffic surges as Suvarnabhumi flourishes

THAILAND. Airports of Thailand (AoT) has posted a +12.7% rise in international passengers (embarking, disembarking, transit) to 3,842,476 for the month of March. First-quarter international traffic gained +11.2% to 11,440,373.

Total passengers for the month (including domestic) amounted to 6,027,2182 – an increase of +10.8% compared to the previous year.

The figures cover AoT’s entire national airport network, which is made up of Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang in Bangkok, as well as Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Chiang Rai.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport recorded a +10.6% rise in international passengers to 3,379,008 during March. For the first quarter, international passengers at the country’s main gateway rose by +8.8% to 9,947,191.

Analysts are watching Thai inbound tourism numbers closely to assess the impact of March’s earthquake and tsunami (and subsequent nuclear crisis). Japan is a key source market for Thailand’s tourism industry but any decline is likely to be offset by strong growth in tourism from other markets, notably China.
