One of Majorica’s pearl knotters, or ‘perleras’, demonstrating the pearl knotting process at Palma de Mallorca Airport |
SPAIN. Spanish travel retailer Aldeasa has partnered with Mallorca-based jewellery firm Majorica in a Trinity-style airport promotion to demonstrate pearl knotting.
One of Majorica’s 12 expert pearl knotters is demonstrating this traditional knotting technique at Aldeasa’s shop at Palma de Mallorca Airport from 22 to 31 March.
The Majorica factory has been knotting pearls by hand for 120 years. An artisan from the Manacor factory will explain the pearl culturing process to the public, as well as how the jewellery is designed.
According to Aldeasa Director of National Operations Pedro Castro, the promotion in The Shop at Palma Airport “is proof of Aldeasa’s commitment to give added value to our commercial spaces with innovative marketing events, while responding to the commitment we have with local suppliers and producers which we represent in airports around the world”.
How a Majorica necklace is made
The pearls used for Majorica necklaces are knotted one by one to avoid losing them all if the necklace breaks. The ‘perleras’ use the latest technologies, giving each piece produced in the Majorica factory high quality with a ten-year guarantee.
Quality control is strict and 20% of the pearls produced are rejected; the crystal nucleus is then recovered and the process begins again.
The company produces over 25 million units annually, for a total of more than 625,000 finished pieces distributed worldwide. Pearl knotting is now one of Mallorca’s most important industries.
