Amsterdam Airport Schiphol introduces centralised security system

NETHERLANDS. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol switched over to centralised security this morning, in a move that Schiphol Group said would deliver a more efficient and smooth journey through the airport for travellers.

Schiphol is now using five large central checkpoints, replacing the 130 security lanes at the gates. The move has also delivered more concourse space back to the airport.

Schiphol Group President & CEO Jos Nijhuis said: “The transition to central security is a milestone in the renovation of the terminal. It means greater comfort for passengers and a more efficient process for the airlines. A fantastic achievement by all the parties involved, certainly when you consider that we have always remained open during the renovations and will continue to do so. 55 million passengers chose Schiphol last year, and they could all see the renovation work which was being carried out.”

To enable the transition to central security, the airport has undergone a major overhaul. An extra floor was constructed in Departure Halls 2 and 3 to accommodate the new checkpoints. On Piers E, F and G, an additional level was built to separate the passenger flows.

In total, Schiphol now has three security checkpoints for departing passengers and two for transfer passengers.

Schiphol is also undertaking some major infrastructure investments, among them the renovation of Departure Lounge 2. A new Hilton Schiphol Hotel will also open this year.
