NETHERLANDS. In the first quarter of 2007 almost 10 million passengers travelled through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. According to figures from Schiphol Group, this is an increase of +6.6% compared with the same quarter in 2006.
In March, the number of passengers showed growth of +8.6% compared with the same month in 2006.
Meanwhile Schiphol celebrated 50 years of tax and duty free shopping on 15 April. The first store opened on that date in 1957. The 11 airside retailers at Amsterdam collectively present themselves under the name ‘See Buy Fly’.
The airport said: “Now, 50 years later, the See Buy Fly airside shopping centre in Amsterdam Airport Schiphol’s terminal has some 75 outlets and passengers have over 140,000 items from which to choose, all at very competitive prices.
“In celebration of See Fly Buy’s 50th birthday, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is treating retailers and passengers to a continuous performance of singing confectioners who hand out bonbons. On 1 May 2007, Schiphol is organising a photography contest in honour of the special occasion. Entries will be judged on the funniest portrayal of a See Fly Buy bag. Winners will be eligible for prizes such as a digital reflex camera.”
