The new Maryland House will be the biggest service plaza in the US both in size and turnover when it opens in December 2013 |
US. US airports and highways concessionaire Areas USA has taken over the operation of two service plazas on the I-95 highway in Maryland. The company, which won the 35-year concession in March, is investing US$56 million to rebuild the Maryland and Chesapeake plazas, adding several new brands to each offer.
The company will operate the existing Chesapeake building temporarily until the new building at the Maryland plaza – which will be closed for construction in the interim – is opened in December 2013. The Chesapeake plaza will then be closed for reconstruction, due to be completed by September 2014.
The new Maryland plaza will be the largest in the US in both size and turnover when it is opened. It will feature a new range of national and local brands, including Wendy’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, Phillips Seafood, Jerry’s Subs & Pizza, Currito, and Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs.
At Chesapeake the company will bring new brands including Wendy’s, Earl of Sandwich, Pizza Hut, KFC and Dunkin’ Donuts.

The company said that both plazas will eventually feature large, naturally lit public spaces that create transparent dining commons opening to outdoor seating areas. Each plaza also will feature wifi internet access, additional bus parking and a staffed welcome/visitor centre.
Areas USA will inform the public about the upcoming changes and closures associated with the reconstruction through its website and that of the Maryland Transportation Authority, as well as through brochures distributed at plazas and other rest stops.
