ATÜ Duty Free broadens Arrivals shopping offer at Istanbul Atatürk; Umdasch provides key design touches – 17/11/09

The ATÜ Duty Free Arrivals store is the first of three refurbished units that will open at Istanbul Atatürk Airport

TURKEY. ATÜ Duty Free, the alliance between TAV Airports Holding and Unifree – in which Gebr Heinemann is a major shareholder – last month opened the first in a series of new-look Arrivals duty free stores at Istanbul Atatürk International Airport. The retailer was supported by leading shopfitting group Umdasch Shop-Concept.

The first of the new Arrivals outlets – a 244sq m unit – opened in October, to be followed by two more stores. ATÜ Duty Free is aiming to match the high standards of its Departures duty free stores with those in Arrivals.

ATÜ Duty Free was profiled in the September issue of The Moodie Report Digital Print Edition

Umdasch, which is carrying out the shopfitting on behalf of the retailer, noted: “The Arrivals shop is open on all sides, its boundaries indicated only by an LED-controlled band showing the skyline of Istanbul.

“The colourfully staged wall of wine is particularly eye-catching. On a backlit LED shelving system the stainless steel structure presents fine vintages from famous wine regions. The most exclusive bottles are in the integrated cooling unit. Wine tastings in the central tasting area help customers to make the right choice. Advice and service are given high priority: trained staff pass on tips about the wine to passing travellers.”

The retailer has also widened the range of goods on offer, which includes fragrances & cosmetics, liquor, tobacco, jewellery and fashion accessories, including Swarovski, Gucci, Boss and DKNY.

Arrivals accounts for around 40% of duty free sales at Istanbul Atatürk, mainly from Turks returning to the country.

Speaking to The Moodie Report about the Arrivals project for our September Print Edition, ATÜ Duty Free General Manager Ersan Arcan said: “We are rebuilding our Arrivals stores from scratch, and they will have a much improved layout, with room for new categories. We aim to conclude the work by the end of this year.”

Apart from its work in Istanbul, Umdasch has helped open new outlets at airports in Frankfurt, Larnaka, Oslo, Geneva, Enfidha/Monastir, Dublin, Abu Dhabi, Moscow Sheremetyevo and Waikiki in Hawaii.
