Autogrill and Tamoil win 30-year Swiss motorway service area concession

SWITZERLAND/ITALY. Travel foodservice leader Autogrill has collaborated with Swiss oil company Tamoil to win a new 30-year concession. The partners will manage the Herrlisberg Nord motorway service area in the Zürich canton from 2023.

The concession – with an option for a further ten years – is expected to generate sales of around €400 million (US$404.8 million) across its duration. About 40% will come from the oil business and the remaining 60% from food and retail spaces.

The Herrlisberg Nord service area is located on the A3, a Swiss motorway which carries over 55,000 vehicles a day. Concepts planned for the location include GranBar, Holy Cow and SPAR.

GranBar is one three established Autogrill travel food & beverage concepts which will feature at the Herrlisberg Nord motorway service area

Autogrill said the new service area will feature modern architecture with glass and wood materials prominent that will offer guests a warm and light-flooded ambience. With details such as a photovoltaic system and heat pumps, the focus will be on sustainability and resource awareness, according to the company.

Tamoil’s retail network consists of 250 service stations spread throughout Switzerland, working with a food & beverage partner in each location.

Tamoil Retail Network Manager Hans Boesch said: “In Autogrill, we were able to find an experienced partner and a leader in the field of food and beverage for travellers in high-frequency locations. We are delighted to delegate this very important part of the project to Autogrill and to collaborate with them for the first time in Switzerland.”

The Autogrill concept GranBar at the service area will be first of its kind in Switzerland. The staple offering is Italian Kimbo coffee accompanied by a large snack selection ranging from croissants to paninis and hot snacks.

The Holy Cow concept (outlet at Zürich Airport pictured) already has a strong foothold in the Swiss travel market

Holy Cow is a burger concept developed in Lausanne, which Autogrill claims has revolutionised Swiss burger gastronomy with its gourmet approach. The group already operates 13 such restaurants in Switzerland.

The SPAR store will occupy a 120sq m space, where shoppers will be offered a wide selection of food and non-food products.

Autogrill Europe CEO Andrea Cipolloni said: “We’re delighted to be consolidating our business in Switzerland and strengthen our collaboration with Tamoil, a very important partner for us.

“The policy of granting such long-term concessions is unique if you look at other countries in Europe and reflects a vision of market stability that favours highly experienced operators, like Autogrill, who can guarantee consistently high quality over time.”
