Bacardi marks 150th anniversary with old-style bar in World Duty Free store

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Bacardi rum, Bacardi Global Travel Retail has partnered with World Duty Free in a London Heathrow promotion.

The campaign harks back to 1930s Cuba when American tourists travelled to the island to escape prohibition-era United States, according to Bacardi. In particular, the art deco bar of Edificio Bacardi – the Bacardi building in Havana, Cuba – became a favourite with US celebrities when it opened in 1930.

Taking its inspiration from the building, the Bacardi bar in the World Duty Free store is decorated with a similar art deco style design. The formally dressed bartenders are serving two cocktails which are said to have been classics of the era – the Original Bacardi Daiquirí and the Authentic Bacardi Mojito.

Also taking their design inspiration from the Edificio Bacardi are two of the World Duty Free store’s gondola display units. Both units are topped with the same detail as the central tower of the building and crowned with a 3D Bacardi bat. Other features of the gondolas and the store’s large wall bay unit are displays documenting historic moments in Bacardi’s 150-year history, supported by vintage images and photography.

As part of the promotion, customers who purchase two bottles of Bacardi rum will receive a Bacardi three-piece stainless steel cocktail shaker.

“Throughout 2012 we are celebrating 150 years of Bacardi bringing people together to enjoy the very best cocktails at legendary parties,” said Bacardi Global Travel Retail Regional Director – North and South Europe Aude Rocourt.

“The parties which took place at Edificio Bacardi in the 1930s are legendary to this day and we’re delighted that at London Heathrow we’ve brought to life this extraordinary era in the history of Bacardi rum and the history of cocktails so that consumers can taste it for themselves,” she added.
