SINGAPORE. Changi Airport Group has selected the fourth finalist – and the first Singaporean – in its “˜Be a Changi Millionaire’ 2012 Grand Draw.

Peh Hock Peng, a business development director of an intellectual property firm, shopped at Changi Airport in August before departing for a business trip. The first three finalists for the Millionaire Draw were from China.

Before boarding his Singapore Airlines flight to Chennai, India, on 13 August, Peh visited the Perfumes and Cosmetics store at Terminal 2’s Departure Transit Mall, where he bought S$210 (US$172) worth of cosmetics for his wife. As a result of this purchase, Peh now stands a one-in-six chance of winning S$1 million (US$818,000) in the Millionaire Grand Draw to be held next January.

“I am excited and nervous, and just trying to keep my calm,” said Peh, who first received news of his win over the phone, halfway through a game of golf in Shanghai. A frequent traveller who jet sets around the Asia Pacific region for work at least once a month, Peh is a loyal shopper at Changi Airport.

Before departing, he usually shops at Changi’s Departure Transit Malls. “Changi Airport has a wide range of products for every customer and you are sure to find something that you want or like. Prices are cheaper and most importantly, we don’t have to pay GST (Goods and Services Tax), which translates to savings. I usually buy beauty products for my wife and gifts for my customers. Sometimes, I also get unique toys for my kids, as well as chocolates and sweets for them.”

At the Grand Draw in January 2013, a total of six finalists will gather at Changi Airport for the finale to determine which one of them will win S$1 million. “˜Be a Changi Millionaire’ has made two shoppers at Changi Airport overnight millionaires since the promotion’s debut in 2010.

During the six-month “˜Be a Changi Millionaire’ promotion in 2012, which runs from 12 May to 11 November 2012, one finalist is drawn each month for participation in the Grand Draw. Each finalist wins a cash prize of S$5,000 (US$4,094) each, with return airfare to Singapore (for non-Singapore residents) plus a two-night hotel stay.
