CHINA. Last-minute touches are being made to the retail offer in the international wing of Beijing Capital International Airport’s spectacular new Terminal 3, which opened earlier this month.
Sunrise Duty Free will run most of the stores, which comprise liquor, tobacco & confectionery outlets, perfumes & cosmetics shops and a variety of specialist boutiques.
Only a handful of the stores were open during The Moodie Report’s visit last week with the rest set to come on stream as further airlines transfer across from T2. But the difference in both space and quality terms from the existing terminals is already apparent.
The addition of the US$2.7 billion Terminal 3, said to be the largest covered structure ever built, will enable the airport to handle 76 million passengers a year across its three terminals, against 53 million passengers in 2007.
The building runs for 3.25 kilometres (2.0 miles) and covers 98 hectares (245 acres) of floor space, the equivalent of about 170 soccer pitches. That’s equivalent to all five London Heathrow terminals under one roof with an extra +17% of floor space left over.
Last wee The Moodie Report visited Beijing to view the new terminal and meet ACT management, as well as the GABICO team that is managing the domestic retail at T3 (click here for our earlier report from Beijing). Our full report will appear in a forthcoming special edition of The Moodie Report PLUS, out later this month.
