INDIA. Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) today revealed plans to press ahead with a new Terminal 2 at Bengaluru International Airport.
The board agreed to start work immediately on planning and constructing the new terminal, which will have an initial capacity for 15 million passengers, and will be expanded to 36 million in later phases. “Design for the new terminal building will be selected through a global bidding process involving world’s leading architects,” said BIAL.
To cater for the current growth in passenger traffic, the existing terminal building will also be expanded. Architectural firm HOK has been appointed to design the expansion. This development will take the annual capacity of the existing terminal to 15 million passengers annually.
Meanwhile, a comprehensive landscaping project will also be undertaken on the city side leading up to the airport to enhance the passenger experience and do justice to Bangalore’s reputation of being a “˜Garden City’, said BIAL.
Among the investors is GVK Power & Infrastructure Limited (GVKPIL), which recently took a 29% stake in BIAL. As announced in November, the company has entered a strategic alliance with Zürich Airport – which operates Bengaluru International – to grow in the Indian aviation market. Through that deal GVKPIL took a 12% stake in BIAL. In December it followed that by purchasing a further 17% from BIAL shareholder, L&T Infrastructure Development Projects.
GVKPIL – one of India’s leading infrastructure groups – is also involved in the operation and modernisation of India’s busiest airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai.
With the changes to BIAL’s shareholding and the arrival of GVKPIL the board includes three new members: G.V. Krishna Reddy, Indira K. Reddy and G.V. Sanjay Reddy.
“We intend to fast track implementation of the new master plan for Bengaluru International Airport,” said Chairman G.V. Krishna Reddy. “We are excited by the opportunity of creating a new landmark in the city of Bangalore and will ensure that the new passenger terminal combines the best in technology and processes with an iconic design that makes the people of Bangalore proud.”
