Bidders line up to consider Detroit duty free, speciality retail options

USA. Prospective bidders for duty free and speciality retail concessions at Detroit Metropolitan Airport will be attending a pre-proposal conference/site visit tomorrow, 12 August.

On 28 July Wayne County Airport Authority issued Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for a single concession covering duty free operations at the airport’s McNamara and North Terminals, plus three speciality retail contracts at McNamara Terminal.

The exclusive duty free contract runs for ten years and the speciality retail concessions for seven. Each is subject to three additional one-year renewal options. Proposals are due by 4 September at 2:00 PM Eastern Time.

The two duty free locations cover 6,090sq ft and 1,102sq ft respectively. The three branded retail opportunities embrace 438sq m, 993 sq m and 1,174sq m of space.

For the duty free airport opportunity (currently held by Duty Free Americas), the airport company said: “The successful proposal will offer; 1) a duty free shopping experience that invokes similarities to premium luxury environments such as Harrods, Giorgio Armani, Saks 5th Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman, etc. and 2) feature the latest in new products and merchandise that include a variety of established premium brands such as Ferragamo, Hermès, Bvlgari, Armani, Ralph Lauren etc.”

For 2014, duty free sales in the McNamara Terminal reached US$9,740,287 (sales per enplanement of US$7.49), with sales in the first four months of 2015 running at US$2,613,259 (US$6.43). The North Terminal posted duty free sales of US$439,722 (US$3.33 sales per enplanement) last year and US$131,032 in the first four months of 2015 – once again with a drop in sales per enplanement, this time to US$2.84.
