Big Five Duty Free retains South African airport duty free concession after open tender – 28/08/09

SOUTH AFRICA. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) today announced that Big Five Duty Free (Pty) Ltd, in which German travel retail Gebr Heinemann is a shareholder, has been successful in winning (and thus retaining) the concession for the operation of core duty free outlets at South Africa’s premier international airports.

The airports are O.R. Tambo (in Johannesburg); Cape Town International Airport, and the new international airport being constructed at La Mercy in Durban (which is to replace the current Durban International Airport in May 2010).

The contract runs for ten years from March 2010, in time for the FIFA World Cup (football), which takes place in South Africa next June and July.

Big Five Duty Free competed against two other bidding consortia, namely Tourvest Holdings/The Nuance Group and Velvorite/Duty Free Singapore (DFS/Flemingo).

ACSA said that as determined through the bid evaluation process, Big Five Duty Free achieved the highest points in the following areas:

1. Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (counting 10 points),
2. Minimum annual guaranteed rental proposed (counting 40 points),
3. Percentage of turnover rental proposed (counting 20 points),
4. Financial standing of bidder and sureties (counting 10 points), and
5. Business plan (counting 20 points), including:
a. Market analysis, strategy and proposed branding,
b. Product strategy and innovation,
c. Management and operation plan, and
d. Penetration

Airports Company South Africa Head of Retail Mahesh Govind said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all bidders for the interest shown in this concession by having participated in the bid and wish them all success in their endeavours going forward.”
