Big Shoulders Coffee opens first venue at Chicago Midway International

USA. Prominent Chicago coffee brand Big Shoulders Coffee has opened for business in its first standalone premises at Chicago Midway International Airport.

It is the latest of 70 new food and retail brands to begin trading at Midway as part of the US$75 million concessions redevelopment led by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) and the Midway Partnership.

A special event was staged to open the new venue, which is located near Gate A14 in Midway’s A Concourse. It is offering travellers its signature brewed and roasted coffee brands, alongside a daily assortment of specialty drinks and breakfast sandwiches.

Big Shoulders has been operating in Chicago since 2012, with locations in the city including the Loop, West Town, the Gold Coast Historic District, River North and in the Chicago Board of Trade building.

CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee said: “Big Shoulders Coffee started in Chicago and is now a hometown favourite. Through our Midway concessions redevelopment, we look forward to bringing forward many more unique local brands that will give our passengers a sense of place, and a taste of the City of Chicago.”

Big Shoulders Coffee founder Tim Coonan (third from left) joins airport partners to officially open the new venue.

As reported yesterday, Big Shoulders Coffee founder Tim Coonan is among the headline names participating in Chicago Midway’s contribution to Chicago’s Airport Restaurant Week, which is currently underway and runs to 7 February. He will host cooking demonstrations and free samples of Big Shoulders Coffee are available to ticketed passengers.

Coonan said: “We are thrilled to increase our coffee brand recognition at Midway, and very grateful for the opportunity to touch so many passengers who travel through the airport on a daily basis.”

Last month, Big Shoulders Coffee was named one of “The 25 Best Coffee Roasters in America” by Gear Patrol magazine.
