UK. Birmingham International Airport (BIA) is evaluating bids for its single contract tender covering space in both terminals with a decision expected in around a month. [See our home page update – 25/01/05 – for the latest developments].
BIA Head of Market Development-Commercial Ray Savage told The Moodie Report this morning: “I can confirm that we had five robust tenders submitted and we are in the process of short listing to the final two. There has been significant interest from the trade.”
The decision on who those two players are has been taken and all parties are currently being advised how they stand.
The incumbent is Alpha Retail which will be very keen to defend its contract. For the first time BIA also spoke to non-UK companies. Several of Europe’s biggest concessionaires are known to have tabled bids.
Start-up is expected in early 2006. As revealed previously, BIA plans to replace the five separate stores in T1 with a single anchor store. This will increase retail space there from around 750sq m to approximately 1,100sq m. The single T2 store is around 400sq m in size. The two-terminal concession will run for between five and seven years.
