Black Bottle goes back to black as it celebrates origins with new look

Blended Scotch whisky brand Black Bottle has gone back to its roots with brand new old-inspired black packaging and a revised blend.

When it was launched by the Graham Brothers in 1879, Black Bottle was presented in a black bottle sourced from Germany. Supply was subsequently interrupted by the onset of World War I and Graham and Co were forced to switch to a regular green bottle.

“Now, a century later, Black Bottle is celebrating its origins by going back to black. The new design has been inspired by an archival black bottle from the company, dating back to 1906, while the blend has also been adjusted to reflect the recipe created in Aberdeen by Gordon Graham and his brothers, Charles and David, 135 years ago,” the brand stated.

Black Bottle Spokesperson for Duty Free Robyn Bradshaw said: “The revised blend offers a more authentic version of Black Bottle’s north-eastern, late 19th century roots. Complex but approachable, it offers an excellent balance between richness and smokiness and a great texture. It’s also very versatile and can be enjoyed neat or with a mixer, which is why aficionados and newcomers are responding with such keen approval.”

Bradshaw added that both the new look and blend were the result of rigorous research and had gained rave reviews, winning the World’s Best Relaunch Award at this year’s World Whisky Design Awards.

Already available in the UK, Russia and the Baltic States, Black Bottle is to be released in France and Germany during the autumn and will be available in the US by winter. A one-litre format will be introduced as an exclusive to travel retail in November.

Black Bottle is described as fresh and floral on the nose with whiffs of new-sawn oak and a hint of smoke. “It opens onto a silky palate with delicate smoke and peat balanced by sweet oak and honey, to end on a lingering finish of spice,” the brand stated.

Further information and tastings will be available on the Distell stand (Green H44) at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes this October.
