HUNGARY. Budapest Airport, one of Hochtief AirPort’s portfolio of airports, has selected The Design Solution and Pragma Consulting to assist in the creation of a new commercial spatial plan and undertake a retail review of the airport’s Terminal 2. The appointment followed a competitive tender.
The project is part of Budapest Airport’s €261 million development programme, named BUD Future. It will be delivered in stages with the first major commercial space, SkyCourt – a new terminal connecting terminals 2A and 2B – to be completed by the end of 2009. SkyCourt will deliver some 7,000sq m of trading space to service an estimated 13.3 million passengers by 2018.
Terminal 2 is currently operated as two separate terminals. The new development will see the retention of separate check-in halls from which passengers will flow through two centralised security zones to converge at a new 1,300sq m walk-through duty free shop. From here passengers will emerge into a huge double-height space with views over the apron.

Robbie Gill, Director for the project at The Design Solution, said: “Having considered many alternative configurations, we have ended up with a great plan that integrates a classic walk-through duty free shop before entering a central area surrounded by shops and niche food and beverage offers. With space in demand, the majority of the major food and beverage offers are located at the mezzanine level along with the majority of the airline lounges.”
Budapest Airport Director of Retail Bob McFadyen said: “We are always keen to capitalise on the investment made by other parties in consultants – experience and practicality rate highly and having worked with The Design Solution at Sydney Airport I was well aware of their capabilities.
“While there are several fundamental elements to successful airport retail planning and design it really comes down to maximising customer exposure to the retail product in an environment that is conductive to spending. We are confident that passengers, retailers and shareholders will be delighted with the final outcome which will consolidate Budapest Airport as the most successful airport in Central and Eastern Europe.”
