CDFG extends cruiseline duty free foothold with second CSSC Carnival contract

CHINA. China Duty Free Group (CDFG) subsidiary CDF Cruise Services Co has been awarded an exclusive three-year duty free retail contract onboard the CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping-owned Costa Mediterranea.

The contract is CDF Cruise Services’ second (after the Costa Atlantica) with CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping (a joint venture established in 2018 between Carnival Corporation and China State Shipbuilding Corporation).

Costa Mediterranea, which can carry 2,680 passengers, will begin sailing various Chinese port routes by the end of this year. The duty free retail space will be expanded to around 600sq m.

CDFG said: “This project deepens the cooperative relationship between CDFG and CSSC Carnival, and also has positive significance for expanding CDFG’s market share in the Asia Pacific cruise duty free market and bidding for other international cruise duty free operation rights.

“At present, due to the impact of the epidemic, there are uncertainties in the recovery of the international cruise tourism market in the short term,” the company added.

“But in the long run, with the accelerated transformation of traditional tourism to high-end vacation tourism, cruise tourism, as a representative of high-end marine leisure and vacation methods, has broad development prospects.”

CDFG noted that it has been deeply involved in the cruise industry at home and abroad for over ten years. The Mediterranea contract will increase the company’s market share and enhance its international competitiveness and operational ability; deliver an improved passenger experience; and promote the steady development of China’s cruise industry and related service sectors, the retailer added.
