Chicago O’Hare Airport awards design lead for two satellite concourses

USA. The City of Chicago has chosen Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) as the architect team to lead the design of the new satellite concourses 1 and 2 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

The concourses are an integral part of the dual hub’s much bigger US$8.5 billion ‘Terminal Area Plan’ expansion, according to the city, and will be fully paid for by airport revenue. United Airlines and American Airlines are the main airline partners at O’Hare.

The centrepiece Global Terminal and Concourse (awarded to Jeanne Gang’s joint venture Studio ORD) together with the satellites will provide 70% more passenger space and a 75% increase in commercial space

Following contract negotiations, SOM will begin working with the City of Chicago and O’Hare 21 stakeholders on the project. O’Hare 21 is the airport’s most significant infrastructure project in a generation, designed to bring the US gateway into the 21st century.

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot: “Chicago and our airline partners are making necessary investments today to keep the airport number one in the nation.”

Mayor Lori E Lightfoot said: “With more than 80 million passengers relying on O’Hare every year, Chicago and our airline partners are making necessary investments today to keep the airport number one in the nation for connectivity and a competitive global hub for the future.”

Measuring approximately 111,500sq m (1.2 million sq ft), satellites 1 and 2 – to be built west of the main terminal core – will feature concourses that are double the width of those currently in use at O’Hare.

Costing US$1.4 billion, the concourses are slated to break ground in 2022. They will be light-filled and designed with flexible gates to accommodate both narrow and wide-body jets, increasing connectivity and streamlining travel.

Satellite 1 will house both international and domestic arrivals and departures while Satellite 2 will support domestic arrivals and departures plus international arriving passengers from pre-cleared markets who have already gone through US Customs Border Protection before boarding their flights to the US.

A 75% increase in commercial space

In total, the centrepiece Global Terminal and Concourse (awarded to Jeanne Gang’s joint venture Studio ORD) together with the satellites will provide 70% more passenger space and a 75% increase in commercial space. This means potential to have over 50 unique new dining and retail brands plus more passenger amenities and lounge space.

Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Jamie L Rhee said: “O’Hare 21 is a truly transformational programme for the airport and the entire Chicago area. It revolutionises the passenger experience and provides regional economic growth that will be felt for years to come.”
