Chinese visitors surge as tourist arrivals rebound in Thailand

THAILAND. International tourist arrivals to Thailand grew by +6.14% in October, reaching 2.18 million according to figures published by the Department of Tourism. The increase marks the first month of growth since January, following an extended period of political unrest.

Chinese visitors – down by -11.12% for the year to the end of October – surged by +67.02% for the month, reaching 501,403 in October and 3.60 million for the year to date. Late last year strong growth in Chinese tourist traffic to Thailand was disrupted by a new outbound tourism law in China.

Among other key nationalities, Malaysian traffic rose by +11.05% to 262,803 in October (-16.32% to 2.03 million for the year to date); Japanese traffic declined by -10.11% to 101,751 (-19.50% to 1.02 million); and Russian traffic declined by -23.24% to 115,197 (+0.03% to 1.26 million).

Thailand has been under martial law since May following months of severe political unrest. For the year to the end of October, total international tourist arrivals declined by -8.72% to 19.74 million.
