Christchurch International Airport to offer NZ$1 billion worth of commercial contracts – 03/05/07

NEW ZEALAND. Christchurch International Airport Limited (CIAL) will take retail and commercial contracts to the market with an estimated total sales value of greater than NZ$1billion (US$738 million) in the lead-up to the delivery of its new NZ$200 million (US$148 million) airport development.

The terminal development will provide major opportunities in retail, duty free, food & beverage and other commercial activities, particularly with a newly combined international and domestic retail precinct, CIAL said.

Property Manager Angela Simpson told The Moodie Report: “Our Integrated Terminal Project is a trigger to take the entire commercial and retail portfolio to the market in some shape or form and is obviously aligned with our NZ$200 million project program. So with our advertising underway [see below – Ed] and rental vehicles imminent (next few weeks) the rest (F&B, specialty retail, duty free and FOREX) are likely to be rolled out over the course of the coming months.”

The airport company said it will be seeking the best local and global operators to deliver a new level of offering to the traveller, having recently achieved successive record growth and with forecast international passenger growth of +4.7% per annum.

Chief Executive Rene Bakx said he believes the airport’s mix of passengers and services underpins a strength to its offering that is unmatched in the region.

Christchurch International Airport is to offer NZ$1 billion worth of contracts in a series of commercial tenders

“We have gained growth in not only the core domestic travel market but also in services both at the premium end of the international market and at the high growth low fare and “˜no frills’ end where high retail spend can be generated. Adding to the stable base provided by our local established airlines, the growth in services from carriers such as Singapore Airlines, Emirates and the establishment of the home base of operations for Pacific Blue and Jetstar puts us in an enviable retail position”, Bakx said.

First underway are the multi-million dollar outdoor and in-terminal advertising concessions for which APN and Eye are now putting forward submissions.

“Being the largest city in and gateway for the South Island we offer a great opportunity for advertisers to reach both business and leisure travellers. We anticipate that a contract of this size and potential with both existing and new airport areas will make for competitive submissions from the two Asia Pacific advertising heavyweights,” Bakx added.

Shortly the Rental Vehicle tender will be taken to the market, to be followed by opportunities across the full spectrum of the retail and food & beverage sectors.

Details will be available on all commercial and retail opportunities, as they are progressively released, through the airports’ specifically developed commercial website www.airportcity.co.nz, where interested parties can make enquiries and register for further information.

DFS Group is the main duty free retailer, supported by a range of specialist outlets.

The airport handled 1,527,483 international passengers (arriving and departing) in 2006.

Passenger movements at Christchurch International Airport increased in March, with a noticeable increase in both domestic and international passengers numbers. Domestic passengers passing through Christchurch Airport reached a record high, and international passengers were up +2.7% year-on-year.

Of particular interest, passenger movements to and from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane were up +5.7%, +9.4% and +3.5%, respectively, over March 2006.
