GERMANY. Claus and Gunnar Heinemann, Co-Owners of Gebr Heinemann, have been presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hamburg Entrepreneurial Awards for 2009. The awards are designed to reward entrepreneurial initiative, determination and achievement.
The award winners were chosen by the Haspa bank, the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper, the Hamburg1 television station, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, the Hamburg Chamber of Skilled Crafts and Small Businesses and Studio Hamburg. The awards were presented at a gala dinner last night held at the city’s Fischauktionshalle.
Over the past 30 years Claus and Gunnar Heinemann, fourth-generation partners in the family-run company, have overseen the expansion of their business into airports, ships and border regions, both at home and abroad.
The number of employees of the firm has increased tenfold in that time to 5,000. The group’s new logistical centre in Hamburg’s Allermöhe district supplies the company’s international chain of shops as well as the new retail brand Heinemann Duty Free, which was launched in 2008.
Other winners at the Awards included local gaming development studio SnapDragon Games in the new business category, and Becker Marine Systems, a local manufacturer of ship rudder systems, in the thriving business category.
