Fruity and concentrated: Viña Zaco

SPAIN. The Codorníu Group has launched a new style of Rioja wine from its Bodegas Bilbaínas winery which is specially targeted at international consumers.

Described as a “new oenological adventure”, Viña Zaco “aims to mark a new era, a new way of interpreting and making wines in this traditional Spanish winegrowing region”.

Viña Zaco is one of the company’s flagship vineyards, producing fruity and concentrated young red wines with the Tempranillo grape varietal.

Diego Pinilla, who elaborates and selects the wines, said: “The only rule for Viña Zaco is that it is a Rioja. From then on there is a lot of flexibility in the winemaking process. There are no constrictions. We have used French and American barrels but do not follow a standard procedure as far as ageing time and technique are concerned. The main logic behind its ageing in barrels is to bring out the maximum expression of the varietal, of the fruit, and this may vary from vintage to vintage.”

Pinilla noted that, at launch time, the 2005 vintage (13.5%abv) had brought out all its aromatic complexity and freshness. “One of this wine’s key features are the dominant floral notes of the Tempranillo varietal: violets, along with the characteristic notes of liquorice and black fruits,” he added.

Viña Zaco was launched in the company’s domestic market of Spain late last year, but it is said to be adapted to the evolving tastes of consumers around the world. The wine can be enjoyed with foods such as tapas, cheese boards and cold meats, chicken, lamb and vegetable dishes.

Viña Zaco tasting notes:

Colour: Intense. Bright cherry with violet hues.
Nose: Initial dominant notes of black fruits, violets and liquorice, followed by underlying spicy notes of ageing in barrels: vanilla and clove.
Mouth-feel: Lots of body with a long fresh finish.
