COSMETICS: Estée Lauder extends La Mer and improves (again) on perfection

UK. The Estée Lauder group has extended its super-premium cult cosmetics brand La Mer – which recently made its Middle Eastern and European travel retail debut at Dubai Duty Free (The Moodie Report.com, 9 December 2003) – with a new Eye Balm.

Specifically formulated for the skin around the eyes – which is around three times thinner (and therefore much more delicate) than any other area – the Eye Balm is claimed to dramatically diminish the appearance of lines, wrinkles and dark under-eye discolorations.

The treatment contains the same nutrient-rich broth (comprising sea kelp, vitamins, minerals and essential plant oils) as the original La Mer formulation, with the addition of Brazilian Malachite. According to the company, this luminising mineral has the ability to absorb the natural light surrounding us. “Light energy is actually transferred to the skin, naturally boosting the effectiveness of the ingredients,” claimed La Mer senior vice president of research and development Joe Gubernick. “The Eye Balm is infused with the delicate green colour of the Brazilian Malachite, which [also] helps to correct the appearance of redness.”

On application, the Eye Balm is said to produce an immediate cooling and soothing sensation. It can also be used on other vulnerable areas such as smile lines, forehead lines and lips.

A treatment as opposed to a moisturiser, the Eye Balm is recommended for “layering” ie. for use after La Mer’s Face Serum and before the original La Mer formulation.

In other news, Estée Lauder has created a new, even larger size for its Perfectionist Correcting Serum for Lines/Wrinkles – now the number-one selling skincare product in the Estée Lauder range. Late last summer (The Moodie Report.com, 8 August 2003), the company added to its original 30ml version with a bigger 50ml presentation. It has now created a 100ml size, which is exclusive to travel retail.

Perfectionist is a retinol-free formulation that is suitable for all skin types. Clinical tests have shown that it immediately improves the appearance of skin by 29% – and that its light-scattering properties lend a 70% improvement to the skin’s radiance.
