Costa Coffee offers a taste of things to come at Heathrow Terminal 5 – 16/01/08

UK. Costa Coffee, one of the UK’s largest coffee shop chains, is set to open a cafe on Friday at London Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 building, which officially opens in March.

The 6,000 staff completing the final stages of the multi-million pound project will be trialling the new landside Arrivals shop later this week, says the retailer.

The Whitbread-owned chain’s enhanced food offer will include fresh paninis, pastries and muffins, along with a selection of slow-roasted Italian coffees.

Terminal 5 Retail Director Nick Ziebland said: “The early opening of Costa Coffee is a hugely significant moment and it will be great for our contractors to sample some of the products that our customers will be enjoying come March. It is also the first and only opening before the official grand opening of Terminal 5 on 27 March. The whole team is extremely excited.”

Costa Coffee Regional Development Manager Matt Bully commented: “We were very pleased that BAA asked us to support them by opening early, but were also aware of the massive challenge this would create for Costa. The coffee shop is expected to be one of the busiest units in the UK and will need a team of 60 staff to run the 24-hour business when the terminal is fully open.”

Costa will operate two stores in T5 from March. The terminal will serve 35 million passengers each year, and will employ 16,000 staff.
