Another sort of runway: Fashion models paraded in front of 350 guests at the airport |
The airport is usually a place for a procession of aircraft on the tarmac and a steady flow of passengers in the terminal, but Helsinki Airport turned expectations upside down last night (24 May) with a fashion show held on one of its runways.
Fashion models took part in a parade of their own during ‘Match Made in HEL’, an event jointly organised by airport operator Finavia and Finland’s flag carrier Finnair. Seven respected names in European and Asian fashion design were brought together for the show.
The designers’ latest creations were unveiled in the airport setting on Runway 2 against the backdrop of a widebody aircraft and evening sunlight. About 350 guests attended the event.
Finavia and Finnair hoped to draw attention to Helsinki Airport’s international standing and its status as a “functional and smooth” transfer airport between Europe and Asia.
“We want to extend a warm thank you for a fantastic show to all guests who attended and all those who participated in organising this event,” commented Finavia VP Marketing and Business Development Katja Siberg. “The designers’ creations sparkled on the runway and the atmosphere was made perfect by the beautiful weather.”
Finnair Vice President Brand, Marketing & Customer Loyalty Johanna Jäkälä commented: “This spectacular event exceeded our expectations, which were very high. We organised this fashion show to celebrate the connections between Europe and Asia and to showcase the work of the most interesting designers of the moment from these two continents.
“Aviation has had a key role in spreading fashion phenomena around the world. Every day on our flights, we see how fashion inspires and connects people. This event has now also created new international bonds.”
