USA. Global hospitality company Delaware North has today opened a new convenience store featuring Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology and Amazon One (a palm-based biometric identity and payment service) at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Located post-security in Terminal 3 along the connector walkway between concourses E and F, The Market on Las Olas is the first location in a Florida airport to feature Amazon’s checkout-free shopping platform.
The store offers a wide variety of grab-and-go items, including sandwiches, chips, snacks and an assortment of packaged beverages.
Shoppers enter the store by using their credit card or hovering their palm over an Amazon One device at the entry gate. The technology detects what shoppers take from or return to the shelves and creates a virtual shopping session.
Guests can grab what they need and leave the store without having to wait in line to checkout. The payment method used to enter the store will be charged only for the items the customer leaves the store with.
Additionally, Just Walk Out technology allows the store to operate with extended hours, even partially unattended.
Just Walk Out is made possible by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) such as computer vision and deep-learning techniques, including generative AI, to accurately determine who took what in any retail setting.
Amazon built synthetic datasets to mimic millions of realistic shopping scenarios – including variations in store format, lighting conditions and even crowds of shoppers – to ensure accuracy in any environment.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport CEO/Director of Aviation Mark Gale said: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Amazon and Delaware North to introduce this exciting store format to FLL travellers.
“As an airport, we strive to explore and embrace new technologies to innovate and elevate the guest experience, and we anticipate this checkout-free store will be well-received by busy travellers.”
Delaware North Travel Florida Regional General Manager Eric Haseman commented: “We strive to improve the speed and convenience of service for our guests. Having witnessed the benefits of Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology and Amazon One at various professional sports venues across the United States, UK and Australia, we are excited to introduce this cutting-edge technology to our travel business.”
Amazon Vice President of Just Walk Out Technology, AWS Applications Jon Jenkins said: “We are proud to bring Just Walk Out technology and Amazon One to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Even when running late for a flight, South Florida travellers will soon be able to grab snacks and beverages with a fast and frictionless shopping experience.”
