DFS Group makes strong headway at LAX – 19/10/05

US. DFS Group’s sales at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) rose strongly in the eight months to August.

Total LAX airport and downtown duty free sales from January to August this year reached US$65.6 million, an increase of almost +11% year-on-year over the 2004 total of US$59.1 million for the period. Those figures are dominated by the DFS Group operation at the Tom Bradley International Terminal.

May was the most rewarding month with sales climbing to US$8.96 million compared to US$7.95 million in May 2004. And the year should finish strongly as the best months in 2004 were September and October, with total monthly sales of US$8.0 million and US$8.4 million respectively.

International flights use several LAX terminals but the dedicated Tom Bradley facility performed better than the overall average, with a year-on-year increase of +12% to August. Sales there for January to August this year totalled US$43.79 million, up from US$39 million for the same period last year.

Duty free sales at the two downtown stores eased back to US$4 million for the January-August period this year, from US$4.2 million last year. This was due to a slow first five months. But off-airport sales have picked up since June, when turnover reached nearly US$578,000 for the month (compared with US$491,000). August sales reached US$524,000, well up on August 2004’s US$444,000.
