Diageo’s Ron Anderson to leave travel retail for key new global role; Phil Humphreys charged with driving travel retail – 13/06/08

UK. Diageo Global Travel & Middle East Managing Director Ron Anderson is stepping down from the role to take on a new post as Chief Customer Officer, looking after global sales areas.

Ron Anderson: Key new global role

Anderson assumed the role from his predecessor Vince Horne on 1 January 2005. During that time he has held dual responsibilities, also operating as Executive Vice President Global Customer Development.

His travel retail mantle will be assumed by Phil Humphreys, currently Diageo’s European Commercial Director, effecive from 7 July. Humphreys will report to Diageo International President Stuart Fletcher.

“As a result of the business growth in travel retail it’s increasingly important to have someone focused full-time on this business as Managing Director,” Anderson told The Moodie Report. The importance of both his shared roles had made that increasingly difficult, he said. He said he was looking forward to the challenges of the new role and would still retain an involvement in the travel retail channel.

In a subsequent statement Anderson said: “It will be hard to leave GTME but I know the business is in extremely safe hands with Phil Humphreys. I expect a seamless transition and, if anything, an acceleration of GTME’s commitment to amazing customer relationships, to creating great times and great experiences for our consumers and for enriching the communities in which we operate. It’s been a rollercoaster ride and I’ve enjoyed every minute.”

Of Phil Humphreys’ appointment, Diageo said: “Phil joined Diageo three years ago and was one of Ron Anderson’s key appointments to the Global Sales team. As Diageo Global Sales and Capability Director he played a very significant role in shaping and elevating the sales agenda. For the last year he has been a member of Diageo’s European Executive as Sales and Commercial Director, contributing his sales experience and drive for performance across Europe. Well known for his passion for sales and the customer and category agenda, Phil joined Diageo from Nestlé where he held a number of senior commercial roles across Europe.”

Humphreys added: “There aren’t many harder acts to follow than Ron Anderson, but I am really excited to be taking over GTME at a time when so much has been achieved and yet there is such a huge range of possibilities still out there. GTME has a reputation within Diageo as an extremely high performing team, a reputation that I am committed to building still further.”

In his new role Anderson will report to Rob Malcolm, President, Global Marketing, Innovation and Sales. In this role he will be the voice of the customer at the most senior level in the company, said Diageo.

Rob Malcolm said: “Ron Anderson has been in a dual role for the last three years as MD Global Travel & Middle East (GTME) and MD Global Sales Development. In leading GTME he has reframed the strategy for global travel, significantly developed relationships with our customers, shifted Diageo’s position within the travel retail industry and delivered consistently great results – changing the growth trajectory of the business and also positively repositioning the role of the travel retail business within Diageo. Overall Ron has a track record of achievement over 22 years in Diageo in a variety of GM and Commercial roles.”
