Don Mueang Airport expansion will strengthen passenger capacity to 50 million

The terminal project at Don Mueang International Airport is a response to the growing number of domestic and international travellers in Bangkok

THAILAND. Airports of Thailand (AOT) today conducted the second public meeting to discuss plans for the Bt36.82 billion (US$1 billion) Don Mueang International Airport development project.

According to local online news media efinanceThai.com, the meeting, led by AOT President Kirati Kijmanawat, gathered inputs from stakeholders and relevant agencies regarding the airport transformation programme.

The airport company plans to finalise the project details and launch the bidding process by early 2025.

The expansion project at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok is set to expand the airport’s annual handling capacity to 50 million passengers per year from the current 30 million.

The programme, which includes the building of a new terminal, is set to add an estimated 140,000sq m of space to the airport, which mostly serves regional and low-cost carriers.

Bangkok Post reported earlier this month that the project will also see terminals 1 and 2 merged and converted into a domestic terminal.

As reported by Bangkok Post last year, work under the development programme will be split into six segments.

The first segment will include the construction of a third passenger terminal with a new concourse in the south of the airport, and the renovation of a seven-storey car park.

Another segment will cover the renovation of the northern side of the airport, including the overhaul of aircraft parking bays and expansion of the northern concourse as well as offices and VVIP lounges.

Construction of the new terminal is expected to begin after the bidding and is set to be operational by 2028. ✈
