CROATIA. Dubrovnik Airport Duty Free Shop sales hit €10 million in the first nine months of 2012, more than +9% up on the same period in 2011. It also surpassed the total figure for 2011 (most of the sales come in the peak Summer season).
The result was generated from a departing international passenger base of 551,116, up by +11% on last year. Dubrovnik Airport Trade Department Manager NikÅ¡a Milanović shared the figures with The Moodie Report at last week’s TFWA World Exhibition.
The average spend per passenger hit €18.19 in the January to September period, just under the €18.53 recorded last year. The number of transactions came to 245,529, up by +7.4% on the prior year period.
The average transaction value was €40.83, marginally up (+1.5%) on a year ago. The penetration rate was 44.55%, just under the 46% recorded last year. The average value per item sold was €14.86.
The leading product category in the nine months was fragrances & cosmetics at 32.05%, or €3.2 million in sales value. This was followed by local products – which the company said was rising rapidly in importance – at 17.93%, cigarettes at 15.47%, spirits at 13.29%, accessories at 9.13% and confectionery at 8.59%.
The leading passenger nationalities in the period were the UK (at more than 25%), France (14%), Germany (11%), Spain (8%), Ireland (4%) and Norway (4%).
Gebr Heinemann is the exclusive supplier of goods to the retailer. Dubrovnik Airport Duty Free Shop operates out of 690sq m of retail space. Croatia joins the EU on 1 July 2013, which will mean the predominantly duty free business becomes duty paid. Milanović noted that this would present a major challenge, but that the company was confident it would adapt well.
