BRAZIL. Dufry Brasil has partnered London-based design consultancy JHP to develop its newly expanded Terminal 2 stores at São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport, which were unveiled in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.
As reported, the travel retailer has extended its duty free concession at Guarulhos T2 until 2016. The Arrivals store has also been expanded from 1,500sq m to 3,400sq m, while the Departures store has grown from 410sq m to 1,100sq m.
Brazil’s high import taxes mean that its airport Arrivals stores generate far more revenue than those in Departures. This has resulted in the development of vast Arrivals stores of “almost hypermarket scale”, offering a wide array of products that are bought by the trolley-load, generating some of the highest basket values in the world, JHP added.
The perfumes & cosmetics category enjoys prime space in-store, facilitated by a walk-through concept incorporating the latest in digital media technology |
JHP has described Dufry’s redesigned walk-through T2 Arrivals store as “a grand affordable bazaar”, housing leading brands in fashion, beauty, confectionery, wines, watches, electrical goods and accessories.
The new store concept incorporates the latest in digital media technology and speedy payment technology, and features spaces for events, product demonstrations, digital branded zones, and consultation points. The sunglasses category, which enjoys particularly strong demand among Brazilians, has been strategically placed at the heart of the concept.
JHP Managing Director Steve Collis commented: “A visit to the new Dufry store provides a stimulating experience that blends glamour with great prices, commodities with luxury products. We set out with Dufry to revolutionise the Brazilian travel retail sector. It was a pleasure working with the senior management team of such a passionate and ambitious retailer.”
Guarulhos International Airport is Brazil’s largest airport, and generates over 60% of Brazil’s total international passenger numbers. The upgrade and expansion are expected to help Dufry raise spend per passenger and spend per ticket at Guarulhos, especially in the run-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The company was recently awarded the duty free concession in Terminal 3.
