Dufry opens world’s biggest Gap travel retail store at Málaga Airport

SPAIN. Dufry Group has opened what is being hailed as the first Gap store in Spain at Málaga Airport. Offering the Gap, GapKids and babyGap collections, the 300sq m store is said to be the American apparel brand’s biggest airport location worldwide.

Dufry said it has plans to open another four Gap stores in Spain this year, at Ibiza, Gran Canaria, as well as the Tenerife Norte and Tenerife Sur airports.

Gap products are available in more than 90 countries worldwide through about 3,200 company-operated stores, over 400 franchise stores, as well as e-commerce sites.

Dufry CEO Julián Díaz commented: “Dufry is very proud that Gap has entrusted us with opening its first store in Spain, the [world’s] largest in an airport. It is a pleasure for us to work with one of the world’s major fashion brands.”

Gap International Senior Vice President Stefan Laban added: “We are thrilled to bring Gap’s casual American style to more customers in Europe. Given the high affinity and brand awareness towards Gap with the Spanish consumers, we felt partnering with Dufry to create branded shopping experiences in the Málaga Airport, as well as airports across Spain, is a terrific next step in our global expansion plans.”

The official opening will be attended by both Díaz and Laban, as well as the Spanish Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor, who will visit the store after her tour around the airport commercial area, accompanied by AENA Chairman José Manuel Vargas.

In 2014 Málaga Airport handled nearly 14 million travellers, coming mostly from Spain and other European countries such as the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands. It is currently the fourth busiest airport in Spain in terms of passenger volume. During the last few years, airport operator AENA has implemented a significant renovation plan for the commercial areas of most airports in the country, including Málaga, to improve the passenger experience.
