Duty Free Partners pushes niche strategy at Guadalajara and Tijuana

MEXICO. Duty Free Partners (DFP) is extending the reach of its operations across Guadalajara and Tijuana international airports.

CEO Fabiano Vivacqua told The Moodie Report the company is embracing a focused, niche marketing approach in its Sky Free Shop stores in Mexico.

He said: “Airports today tend to have a mass of the same high-end brands with similar style and quality of stores, so we’re looking for things that customers haven’t seen so much.”

In February the young Miami-based group opened the first standalone Shiseido boutique in the Americas, with a 38sq m store in Departures at Guadalajara International Airport.

“The Shiseido store is going very well – it’s better than forecast,” Vivacqua said.

Good results are reported from the 80sq m bag store that DFP opened at Tijuana International Airport in January.

“Business at Tijuana is stable, while at Guadalajara it is growing,” Vivacqua said.

Tijuana handled 4.4 million passengers in 2014, up +2.6% from 2013; Guadalajara’s numbers grew +5.6% 5.9 million.

DFP is also growing its airport retail business in Colombia (at Cali and Medellín), and global inflight services.

“We have a lot of good activity in 2015,” said Vivacqua. “We are growing across all our operations.”

A full report on Mexico’s travel retail market will be published in The Moodie Report Latin America supplement in June.
