Alpha Kreol India Managing director A. S. Lal: “Our operations at Cochin Duty Free will run on electricity produced by solar energy from now onwards” |
INDIA. Duty free is one of the beneficiaries as Cochin International Airport (CIAL) this week became India’s first solar-powered airport with the commissioning of a new 12 MWp solar plant.
According to the airport, Bosch Energy and Building Solutions completed the project by installing 46,150 solar panels over an area of 45 acres of land.
This, coupled with an existing 1 MW solar plant commissioned in 2013, which was upgraded from a 100 KW plant set up in the same year, will be enough to meet all power requirements of CIAL, an airport spokesperson said.
The solar plant will produce 18 million units of power annually and the airport’s daily requirement is 50,000 units.
Cochin International Airport Managing Director V. J. Kurian said: “We are spreading our wings to newer skies to realise our ambitious vision of “˜Changing lives through excellence in Aviation and Beyond’ and over the next 25 years, this green power project will save CO2 emissions from coal fired power plants by more than 300,000 metric tons.”
Kurian is regarded as the visionary behind Cochin International Airport which, 16 years into operation, was the first in India to be established with both public and private participation.
Alpha Kreol India Managing director A. S. Lal commented: “Cochin is the first airport in India to be powered by solar energy and we salute Cochin International Airport Ltd for yet another pioneering initiative.
“Our operations at Cochin Duty Free will run on electricity produced by solar energy from now onwards.”
