Electronics chain Maplin tests travel retail potential with Glasgow store

UK. High street electronics retailer Maplin is to open a store at Glasgow Airport next month. It will be the retailer’s first in an airport environment, giving it the opportunity to test a new store model.

Set to open on 1 March, the store will cover 1,000sq ft and will be given an initial one-year trial. The retailer, which operates more than 200 stores across the UK and Ireland, hopes the airport shop will further raise awareness of the Maplin brand.

The store concept will take advantage of the dwell time travellers have at the airport, encouraging them to browse products at their leisure. A tailored range will promote the company’s offer, including an extended selection of tablet accessories, phone accessories and 3D printers, while in-store experts will be available to advise on all aspects of technology and electronics.

Three internet hubs will allow shoppers to browse Maplin’s full range online, and a play table – featuring products including Maplin’s Raspberry Pi computer and a 3-D printer – will also encourage greater dwell time. The store will also offer a click-and-collect service allowing deliveries on return or home deliveries.

Maplin CEO John Cleland said: “With 7.4 million passengers passing through Glasgow Airport last year, it’s evident that this is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the Maplin brand.

“Customers can spend some time browsing whilst they wait for their flight, enjoying some of the new interactive features the store offers. Our Maplineers in-store experts will be happy to help customers with any questions they might have, and if they don’t want to take their purchase on their travels with them we can deliver it to their homes once they return.”

The store in Glasgow will be Maplin’s first in an airport environment

The opening will come ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer for Glasgow Airport, with the Commonwealth Games taking part in the city this year. The airport is owned and operated by Heathrow Airport Holdings Limited.

“We are delighted Maplin has chosen Glasgow Airport to launch its first ever airport store,” said Glasgow Airport Commercial Director Francois Bourienne.

“The new unit, which I’m sure will be extremely popular with both passengers and staff alike, will be a welcome addition to our growing retail portfolio.”
