INTERNATIONAL. The European Travel Retail Council has produced a guidance paper for the industry in an attempt to overcome the confusion among many companies about the new security regulations that have taken effect in Europe and are being adopted in many more locations worldwide.
The paper, entitled ‘Shaping National Regulations and Seeking Bilateral Agreements with the European Union’, sets out the key details of the new rules, and aims to help airport authorities and retailers better understand the new regulations. It includes sections on transfer passengers and on the new ‘tamper-proof’ bags now in use in Europe. And it covers airport security and the critical issue of security in the duty free supply chain.
“This is timely because more and more countries are now looking at adopting EU-style security regimes,” said John Hume of Hume Brophy Communications, which is helping the ETRC with its lobbying efforts on security.
“A lot of countries are starting out on the path to harmonizing their security regulations with those of the EU, especially since the International Civil Aviation Organisation issued a letter encouraging harmonization on 11 December. Some countries are getting it right, in others there is confusion, so this guide sets out the main elements of the rules as they affect the trade.”
