BELGIUM. Passenger traffic at European airports increased by +6.9% in October 2004 when compared with the same month last year, according to new figures from ACI Europe.
The month’s passenger figures indicate that Group 4 airports (airports welcoming less than 5 million passengers per year) had the largest increase in traffic – with an average year-on-year increase of +10.6% – and an average increase of +20.3% when compared with October 2002.
Airports welcoming more than 25 million passengers per year (Group 1), airports welcoming between 10 and 25 million passengers (Group 2) and airports welcoming between 5 and 10 million passengers (Group 3) reported average increases of +4.2%, +7.5% and +5.3% respectively when compared with October 2003.
The same comparison of October 2004 with October 2002 demonstrates average increases of +6.5%, +11.4% and +13.5% respectively.
Some examples of airports that experienced a significant increase in passenger traffic, when comparing October 2004 with October 2003, include:
• Group 1 airports: London Gatwick (+8.1%), Madrid Barajas (+5.6%) and Frankfurt (+4.9%);
• Group 2 airports: Palma de Mallorca (+16.4%), Athens (+14.0%) and Munich (+12.8%);
• Group 3 airports: Prague (+27.0%), Cologne/Bonn (+14.3%) and Stuttgart (+14.2%);
• Group 4 airports: Girona (+89.5%), Riga (+40.8%) and Vilnius (+36.9%).
