Samsonite has marked Earth Day (22 April) with the global launch of a sustainable Magnum Eco luggage collection.
The company said the new range marked a “major innovation breakthrough” in the luggage industry. It also takes the brand “a step further on its responsible journey to becoming the world’s most sustainable lifestyle and travel luggage company”.
Samsonite’s Recyclex recycled material technology is featured throughout the collection. Exterior shells are made from recycled polypropylene while the inside fabric of each suitcase is made from recycled PET bottles.
Samsonite pointed out that its 75cm Magnum Eco suitcase uses recycled plastic waste equivalent to 434 yoghurt cups and 12 plastic bottles.

According to Samsonite, the lightweight luggage range “does not compromise on quality or strength”. Its durability “only adds to the sustainability efforts of the Magnum Eco range by ensuring each suitcase keeps on the road, and out of landfill, for as long as possible”.
Magnum Eco is the result of several years of research and development and close collaboration with Quality Circular Polymers, the plastics recycling joint venture of waste sorting and recycling specialist Suez and LyondellBasell, one of the world’s largest plastics, chemicals, and refining companies.

Suez Recycling and Recovery in Asia CEO Antoine Grange said: “We are delighted to provide Samsonite with solutions that cover the whole value chain to produce high-quality secondary raw materials and satisfy the highest standards, from industries to consumers.
“We look forward to continuing to work with Samsonite for more sustainable and reliable products.”
LyondellBasell Global Olefins & Polyolefins Executive Vice President Ken Lane commented: “We are honoured to be a part of the solution to end plastic waste and welcome the opportunity to partner with respected companies like Samsonite towards this goal.
“The Magnum Eco is a perfect use for our recycled material because it gives new purpose to this valuable resource by providing travellers with a durable, lasting product. We are constantly innovating our sustainable product solutions to meet our customers’ needs.”
Samsonite described Magnum Eco as a luggage collection that is “both light in the hand and light on the mind”. The suitcases are available in four sizes and five colour options. All feature a 3-Point Lock System.
Samsonite underlined its ‘Our Responsible Journey’ strategy which focuses on designing products that last, committing to a reduction in the company’s impact on the planet, and engaging with people, partners, and communities.
“Expect future innovations to be driven by this commitment to sustainability,” the company stated.

Samsonite President Asia Pacific and Middle East Paul Melkebeke commented: “Over the 111 years of history, Samsonite has been resolutely focused on innovation, design, and has been an industry leader in the use of new materials.
“Magnum Eco is our further proof to pioneering new solutions for the decades to come helping travellers’ journey further, with ever lighter, stronger and more sustainable products.”
The Magnum Eco collection will be available in travel retail in late June.
