SRI LANKA. Flemingo has opened its new departures store in 5,060sq ft of space at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport. The company was awarded a five-year contract for core category duty free in March and moves to new locations in both arrivals and departures.
Space in departures has increased by +65% increase over the space occupied previously by Flemingo. The arrivals space remains the same until the airport concludes a major refurbishment.
“The new facility in the departure lounge opened last month and the initial response has been very encouraging and positive”, said Flemingo Duty Free CEO P.K. Thimmayya.
He added: “We have tried to add a sense of visual familiarity and relevance with the target customer’s experience in the country by adding lotus flower motifs across the store. By adapting a well-defined category strategy and by space planning, we have made it easy for passengers to find, understand and navigate the store.”

The layout of the store has been designed to give passengers clear visibility across all categories at one time, said Flemingo, which partnered with UK agency Barber Design for the new stores.
According to Flemingo, highlights of the store are distinct category zones, a design that encourages passengers to navigate the entire shop and expanded product category ranges in fragrances, cosmetics and confectionery. Discussions are underway to bring in additional in beauty. Some of these brands are not available in Sri Lanka and Flemingo plans to launch them by year-end for the first time in the country.
The formal opening of the new store took place on 26 September. As part of that event, Flemingo Foundation, the CSR arm of Flemingo, announced the extension of its support for The Music Project for a second year. The fund will pay for the weekly classes of specialist music teachers who teach the children of the orchestra, holiday programmes, festival programmes, the residential UNITE programme, assist the school with music education for the public exams and support concert performances.
