FRAGRANCES: Celine Dion Parfum set to break new records

US. The Celine Dion collection, first unveiled in January, and launched on 25 March to coincide with the opening of Celine Dion’s Las Vegas show, was one of the heavy-hitting products of last week’s Duty Free Show of the Americas. Intended as a mid-market fragrance below pure prestige, or “mass-tige”, parent company Coty has high hopes for the product, which is marketed in travel retail by Lancaster Duty Free.

Lancaster vice president Americas travel retail and export Latin America vice president Honor Sillwood said the group also continued its successful focus on Glow by JLo, the number one fragrance in the Americas region last year (domestic and duty free) and possibly worldwide. “Distribution for Glow is set,” Sillwood told The Moodie Report. “Some Latin American countries launched in the latter part of last year. Now we are going forward with Celine Dion on the back of an extremely successful sales period.”

The initial sell-in period of Celine Dion has already produced another strong result, equal to the launch of Glow by JLo which was the equal top-selling fragrance ever in the US.

Around the regions, North America produced the best business for Lancaster in the last financial year ended 30 June 2002, when sales were up +68% year-on-year. The Caribbean was also up +10% where operators like Starboard Cruise Services have done excellent work with new stores in making onboard shopping more attractive.

“We can put a lot of this success down to Glow,” said Sillwood. “We are bucking the trend of the market, which has been in decline.” Davidoff’s Cool Water Woman also saw sales rise as the 2 x 30ml twin pack worked well in the region.

The reception to ECHO by Davidoff, which goes on shelf around Europe this week, was also positive amongst regional buyers. Reaction to the urban-style fragrance was “exceptional” said Sillwood.

Celine Dion Parfums is a collection of eau de toilette, body lotion and shower gel combining an inspiring blend of light, luscious florals including water lily, orange blossom and exotic Tiare flower. Over time distribution will broaden outside travel retail and mid-market department stores. Suggested retail prices for the Celine Dion eau de toilette, range from US$20 to $44 (US domestic). In addition Celine Dion Parfums body lotion and shower gel are priced at US$12.50.
