GERMANY. The first part of the ambitious Airport City Mall at Frankfurt Airport has just opened for business.
Work has been going on for months to remodel the subterranean level beneath Terminal 1’s Departure and Arrival areas.
This will result eventually in the completed Airport City Mall, a multi-functional distribution area with connections to the airport buildings, parking structures, rental car providers, local rapid transport trains and the Travel Centre of Deutsche Bahn (German Rail). The facility features urban retail and food & beverage outlets.
Open for business: Stage one of Frankfurt Airport’s subterranean Airport City Mall has opened beneath the T1 arrivals area. It houses a supermarket, a Essanelle/Tröndle hair salon, a cellular phone shop and an organic fresh foods store |
The completed part, section C, is located directly below the C arrivals. It offers a full range of merchandise to meet everyday needs, from a large supermarket across a generously dimensioned Essanelle/Tröndle hair salon to a cellular phone shop.
Tegut, until now located in the A area on this level, is relocated here with 800sq m of retail space with 12,000 articles, including a large selection of organic products and fresh foods for immediate consumption.
The section will gain another attraction in 2008, when the restaurant Himmel & Erde (Earth & Sky in German) opens. It has been designed by upbeat Frankfurt restaurant operator Lucas Dehnhardt to cater to airport visitors and personnel, which are the new level’s main target group.
Meanwhile the remodelling work continues in sections A and B. The plans call for the Airport City Mall to be completed by 2012, offering a completely new image over a total length of 500m.
Frankfurt Airport commented: “By that time it will also offer other target groups a wholly new, highly enjoyable ambiance where they can take advantage of travel functions, services, shopping, food & beverage under one roof.”
