Frankfurt Airport posts slight increase in July passenger traffic but lags pre-pandemic figures

GERMANY. Frankfurt Airport served 6 million passengers in July, up slightly by +0.5% year-on-year, but remains 12.7% below the levels recorded in the same month of pre-pandemic 2019.

Latest traffic figures released today by Frankfurt Airport owner Fraport Group revealed the most popular destinations during the month, including the Balearic Islands, Portugal and Italy.

While travel demand continues to recover, Frankfurt Airport remains behind pre-pandemic levels in terms of passenger traffic

Long-haul traffic during July’s busy summer travel season attracted strong demand particularly to and from the USA.

The number of passengers travelling to and from China rose sharply by +35.5% from the same month in 2023.

The airport also set a new record for passenger load factor surging by +86% in July, up by 0.2 percentage points since August 2015.

Most airports in Fraport’s international portfolio turned in positive traffic performances, including Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia, which posted an +8% traffic growth to 161,783 passengers.

Combined traffic at the Fraport-operated Brazilian airports of Fortaleza and Porto Alegre saw a steep decline of -48.6% to 632,104 passengers last month. The negative performance was mainly attributed to the suspension of flight operations at Porto Alegre Airport due to the impact of heavy flooding in the region.

A contingency schedule is currently in place for the Brazilian airport, with only a limited number of domestic flights being operated from a nearby military base, Fraport noted.

Traffic at Lima Airport in Peru increased by +12.6% year-on-year to 2.2 million passengers, while Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports welcomed a total of 6.4 million travellers, representing a year-on-year increase of +3.8%.

In Bulgaria, the Twin Star airports of Burgas and Varna combined registered 796,997 passengers, down by -1.7%.

In contrast, passenger traffic at Antalya Airport on the Turkish Riviera rose +2.1% year-on-year to about 5.6 million passengers.

The total passenger volume at all airports actively managed by Fraport in July remained consistent with the figures from the same month last year, at around a total of 21.8 million. ✈
