GERMANY. Passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport hit at an all-time monthly high in July amid the summer season peak. The airport served 5,191,760 passengers in the month, +2.1% ahead of the same month last year.
On 29 July the airport welcomed 181,464 passengers in a single day. This summer-vacation Sunday ranked third among the busiest passenger days in the airport’s history. To date it has been the busiest passenger day of the current year.
Intercontinental traffic proved to be the leading growth driver with an increase of +3.4%. Middle East traffic surged by +17.7%. Double-digit growth rates in traffic to and from Egypt (up +17.2%), the Dominican Republic (up +23.1%), the Maldives (up +21.3%) and Sri Lanka (up +24.3%) reflected the increasing expansion of tourism to non-European destinations. European traffic also grew slightly faster than average (up +2.5%).
In July the Fraport Group’s airports (those publicised as majority holdings) topped the eight million passenger mark for the first time – recording a total of 8,188,205 passengers and year-on-year growth of +6%.
Frankfurt-Hahn Airport and Lima Airport in Peru also registered new records in July. For the first time within a single month, Hahn welcomed more than 400,000 passengers. The total of 411,400 passengers is an increase of +12.2% over the same month last year.
Lima Airport (in which Fraport has held 100% of the shares since the beginning of August) registered 717,576 passengers – also a new monthly record and a year-on-year jump of +27.4%. The Fraport terminal in Antalya handled a total of 948,121 passengers in the month – an +11.9% rise. With 564,746 passengers, Bulgaria’s Bourgas Airport also reported a double-digit growth rate of +11.2%. Varna Airport, Fraport’s second airport in Bulgaria, registered 355,014 passengers, nearly level with the previous year (down -0.3%).
