Dr Wilhelm Bender: Results above expectations

GERMANY. Frankfurt Airport set an all-time passenger high in 2007, breaking the 54 million mark for the first time.

Germany’s major hub welcomed 54,167,817 passengers, a +2.5% gain over 2006.

Dr Wilhelm Bender, Chairman of parent company Fraport, said the results exceeded the company’s expectations.

“At the beginning of 2007 we anticipated noticeably slower passenger growth at our Frankfurt home base due to capacity constraints,” he commented. “But better aircraft utilisation and the structural improvement in flight offers at FRA have provided fresh impetus to traffic development.”

The absence of extremely adverse weather conditions also had a positive effect.

The airport closed out the year in style with December passenger numbers up by +3.4% to 3,966,325 – a record for the month of December.

European traffic, up by +4.6%, was the stand-out performer. Intercontinental traffic increased by +3.5%, an easing of recent growth.

Total passenger volume for the Fraport Group reached 75,614,414 in 2007, an increase of +5.5%.

Frankfurt-Hahn, the Group’s second airport in Germany, recorded 4,104,246 passengers, a rise of +8.4%. At Peru’s Jorge Chavez International in Lima, traffic surged by +24.3% to 7,507,811 passengers.

Fraport’s terminals at the Antalya vacation airport in Turkey welcomed 6,488,036 passengers, a gain of +12.7%. Burgas Airport in Bulgaria developed positively, too, posting a +7.3% rise in passengers to 1,949,198. Fellow Bulgarian airport Varna – on the country’s Black Sea coast – saw traffic dip slightly by -2.6% to 1,493,267 passengers.
