Glen Garioch brings precious spirit to travel retail – 24/01/05

The packaging reflects “both the exclusivity of the vintage and the elegance of the Glen Garioch spirit”, according to the company

UK. Glen Garioch Distillery is to release a limited-edition 46yo single malt whisky retailing at £1,200 (US$2,253) per bottle. Sixty out of the 328 bottles produced will be available in travel retail and duty free.

The Glen Garioch 46 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky was distilled on 1 May 1958. It was matured in hogshead casks in the granite warehouses of the distillery based at Old Meldrum in Grampian, Scotland.

The latest release is presented in a packaging which the company says “reflects both the exclusivity of the vintage and the elegance of the Glen Garioch spirit”. The bottle comes in a red velvet-lined wooden box with the trademark Glen Garioch stag, which is embossed on the glass. The bottle is numbered with a handwritten label.

The back of the box explains the history of the distillery and the origin of the whisky. It sets out tasting notes, together with Scottish proverbs which refer to the magic of time: “Drink little that ye make drink lang” and “Lang look’d for, comes at last”. The back also features a song by Robin Laing: “Take clear water from the hill, And barley from the Highlands, Take a master craftsman’s skill, and something harder to define, Like secrets of the coppered still, Or the slow, silent, magic work of time.”

At the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes last October, Glen Garioch’s owner, Morrison Bowmore Distillers, launched the 42yo Auchentoshan 1962 which retails at £1,200 (US$2,160) per bottle.

Fergus Hartley, Morrison Bowmore’s Regional Director for Duty Free, Asia Pacific and Americas, said: “Glen Garioch is the essential Highland spirit – it has been described as dazzling, as having luxurious depth, and has won gold medals at the world’s most influential spirits competitions. This is simply a great dram – the perfect union of the inimitable Highland spirit of Glen Garioch, and time.”

Note: Glen Garioch Distillery is owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers, which has three distilleries in the Scottish regions of Glen Garioch, Auchentoshan in the Lowlands and Bowmore in Islay. Morrison Bowmore Distillers is owned by the Japanese company Suntory.
