Glengoyne hits record new heights in Kuala Lumpur

The RM16,500 (US$5,500) bottle of Glengoyne 40yo sold at Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the most expensive single malt whisky ever to be purchased in Malaysia

UK/MALAYSIA. A bottle of ultra-premium Glengoyne 40yo Highland Single Malt has sold for RM16,500 (US$5,500) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) – the most expensive single malt whisky ever to be purchased in Malaysia.

The transaction is also a new record for brand owner Ian Macleod Distillers, as well as a milestone for the Malaysian travel retail industry.

The sale, which took place just over a month after the product’s launch to the market, also marks the fastest time an alcoholic product valued above RM10,000 (US$3,300) has sold in any Malaysian airport, including KLIA.

Introduced on 1 June, the ultra-premium line was sold last month in Eraman’s duty free store at KLIA’s Low Cost Carrier Terminal.

Ian Macleod Distillers Director of Travel Retail Andy Lane commented: “The Glengoyne 40yo Highland Single Malt is our oldest, most valuable and finest whisky ever produced.

“I believe that it is not only a reflection of the great travel retail team we have in Malaysia, but the exquisite quality of the single malt that led to this record sale.

“We are delighted to have achieved this new benchmark for the ultra-premium market. Nobody has sold a similarly priced whisky in such a short time within Malaysia. I am proud of it,” he added.

Ian Macleod Distiller’s comprehensive travel retail marketing strategy began in 2007 with the launch of new duty free exclusives Glengoyne Burnfoot and Smokehead Extra Rare.

With a growing duty free portfolio and increased presence at events such as the TFWA Asia Pacific and the TFWA World Exhibition in Singapore and Cannes respectively, Ian Macleod Distillers said it is already ahead on sales projection for its five-year travel retail strategy.

Last May Ian Macleod’s regional travel retail team, led by J-Brands, boosted its travel retail promotion strategy by positioning staff training as an integral part of developing sales.

Working closely with the staff from KLIA, J-Brands and customers from the Kuala Lumpur region, Andy Lane and his team led a master class to provide an overview and tastings of the company’s entire travel retail offering.

The Glengoyne 40yo Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is hailed as “the quintessential expression” of Glengoyne’s signature unpeated “˜Real Taste of Malt’. The natural strength Limited Edition Single Malt is displayed in a Glencairn crystal decanter and housed in a solid oak presentation box.

Established in 1933, Ian Macleod Distillers is one of the largest independent family companies within the spirits industry. Its award-winning portfolio – which includes Glengoyne, King Robert II, Langs and Smokehead, as well as gin, rum and vodka – currently has combined total sales of more than one million cases, with 85% being exported to over 65 markets worldwide.
